Endorsements

Background
The UKCC has been established as an endorsement of a sport’s coach education programmes against an agreed set of criteria (the UKCC Endorsement Criteria).
The endorsement process has been in development with key stakeholders since the Spring of 2004. As the UKCC has evolved, sports and other relevant organisations have been informed of the planned developments within this aspect of the UKCC. After initial meetings it was determined that sports coach UK would present recommendations to the Steering Board in October 2004 as to how the process of endorsement for the UKCC would operate (ie how a sport would achieve endorsement of its coach education provision). The recommendations to the Steering Board were based on sports coach UK conducting two stages of consultation. This involved key stakeholders and Phase 1 and 2 sports.
A pilot endorsement process agreed by the Coaching Steering Board with SkillsActive as the endorsement agency ran from June to November 2005 and following the pilot and the subsequent research and review, a new endorsement process was evolved.
This evolved Endorsement Process is planned to be live from April 2006 and you can view the proposed process and the decisions that informed it in the following presentation.

Endorsement Criteria
The endorsement criteria are to be used throughout the UK to endorse coach education programmes offered by national governing bodies of sport and other appropriate/recognised sporting organisations. A coach education programme is considered to comprise a variety of components at a number of levels, offering progression for a coach in a particular sport; reflecting best practice and current educational needs.
Components of coach education programmes, at each level, are considered to be:
- a qualification or qualification(s) awarded by an organisation fulfilling an awarding function responsible for ensuring the quality of the qualification over time
- a programme of learning to guide those with the responsibility for the delivery and assessment of the qualification(s)
learning resources, including technical information on coaching the sport, available in appropriate media, to ensure coaches have access to support materials
- a programme or programmes of training for the personnel with responsibility for delivering, assessing and quality assuring the competence of coaches
- a programme of continuous professional development for coaches (not addressed in this document)
Governing bodies of sport will take lead responsibility for demonstrating their achievement of the UKCC Endorsement Criteria. Where a sport is working with an external awarding body, the evidence required to achieve the criteria should be conducted in partnership.
