New LSC Statement of Priorities
The Learning Skills Council (LSC) has announced that it will give priority to the development and qualification of employed and volunteer coaches in line with some of the key actions outlined in the UK Action Plan for Coaching.
The announcement, made on the 18th of October, is the culmination of a series of discussions held between the LSC, sports coach UK, SkillsActive and DCMS. It underlines the value of the UKCC and credits the hard work that key stakeholders have invested in its development to date.
It stills remains to determine how sports will access the LSC funding stream and SkillsActive and sports coach UK are setting up a focussed working group to investigate the optimal contracting arrangements with the LSC. The group’s analysis will take into account the recently announced Regional Coaching Centres initiative and the pending National Skills Academy and it is envisaged that sports will be able to benefit from September 2007.
As we move forward, it will be crucial that governing bodies of sport have regionalised workforce development plans to justify the continued investment in coaching.
This is an exciting time to be part of the coaching community…

Assistant Coach Education Manager Alan Rapley believes the UKCC will keep British Swimming at the forefront of teacher and coach education.
"British Swimming has always been a leader in sports education and by working towards the UKCC it allows us to improve on good practice and make it great practice. The challenge has been to get all four sports to a level where they can be endorsed and we can provide the resources."
