Qualifications

medal

Coaching qualifications form a fundamental part of a sport’s coach education programme. The UKCC developments have identified that there are five levels of coaching.  These are described below:

Level
What the coach will be qualified to do

5

Generate, direct and manage the implementation of cutting-edge coaching solutions and programmes

4

Design, implement and evaluate the process and outcome of long-term/specialist coaching programmes

3

Plan, implement, analyse and revise annual coaching programmes

2

Prepare for, deliver and review coaching session(s)

1

Assist more qualified coaches, delivering aspects of coaching sessions, normally under direct supervision

For a coach to become qualified at each level, sports will offer a variety of coaching qualifications and training opportunities. The UKCC developments have identified that the content of coaching qualifications should meet minimum requirements.

UKCC minimum requirements for qualifications

To achieve UKCC endorsement, sports will have to demonstrate that their coaching qualifications address all the minimum requirements at each distinct level.

The minimum requirements for qualifications can be used for the following purposes:

  • as a reference for sports when designing and developing sports-specific coaching qualifications to achieve UKCC endorsement
  • to provide guidance for articulating learning outcomes and assessment specifications/strategies associated with the qualification
  • to provide for variety and flexibility in the design of learning programmes whilst maintaining parity of content across sports
  • to be used as part of the endorsement process to assess the sport’s ability to meet the UKCC Endorsement Criteria [link to relevant section].

Learning Programme Models

This section of the UKCC website highlights the work that has been done so far by scUK and the phase 1 sports on designing learning programmes for their sports, using the content of the UKCC guidelines. We have concentrated on Levels 1 and 2. The sports that are involved are:

Triathlon Level 1
Rugby Union Level 1
Cricket Level 2
Rowing Level 2

This project started in June of this year. There were two main aims:

  1. To bring to life the UKCC guidelines. This process enabled scUK to check that there was common understanding between the sports regarding the level of performance expected by their coaches. For example, were all the sports interpreting the statements that describe the skills/knowledge of a coach in the same way? Were the statements realistic in terms of assessment.
  2. To help sports build learning programmes that meet individual learners’ needs and makes the best possible use of the delivery time available. These learning programmes can then be used as exemplars for other sports to use.

All the learning programme models are working towards creating the evidence that is required to meet the UKCC Endorsement Criteria.

The links below represent the work that has been undertaken so far and consists of:

Presentations from Forum events that specifically addressed this issue
(15 July and 21 October 2004)

The Learning Programme Models produced so far by three of the sports:

Triathlon
Cricket
Rowing

As this is an ongoing project, we will update the website when any new information is available. We will start to work with sports on learning programme models for Levels 3,4 and 5 shortly and will post any evolved work from the existing Level 1 and 2 models.
